sock + coffee

{Yarning Along with Ginny}

I started a new sock for in the mornings. This new routine of sock + coffee before everyone is up is really working out for me. I sometimes even get to catch up on podcasts if I'm up early enough and the whole day just seems to move a bit smoother somehow.

That colorway is called Blue Box Exploding from Nerd Girl Yarns. I couldn't pass up this particular Doctor Who reference to one of my very favorite episodes. Admittedly, her whole nerdy shop is a dangerous one for my budget.

The pattern is for Leyburn Socks and I'm knitting two at a time on DPNs again, one section at a time. I learned a toe-up cast on for this pattern, and feel pretty pleased with myself for that small success. I've attempted the toe-up thing before (bleh) but this time used a figure 8 cast on with very clear directions from a past Knitty.com article with great success. I'm still not sure I like to work toe-up, but that's a decision to make after I've knit a few socks with this method.

Reading just a little the past few days: listening to Trumpet of the Swan on CD with the boys, tripped through another chapter of Gone Girl before putting it aside for good, and picked up Ender's Game again.

  1. I love that yarn! I enjoy getting up before everyone and knitting for a while. Lately my fingers are kinda numb though. Not sure what that is all about. How do you like those needles? I loved them but prefer magic looping my socks these days.

    1. I'm not really a fan of magic loop the few times I've tried. I don't know if it's because I'm just so used to DPNs or what, but it seems a lot more fiddly to me for some reason. I'd love to be able to invest in some Signature needles just for socks, but they aren't in the budget for now- at least until after I acquire a spinning wheel. ;)

  3. I love that episode of Doctor Who also and the colors in that yarn are PERFECT!

    I prefer to knit my socks toe up now because I can put the worry that I'll run out of yarn out of my mind.

  5. stunning colors! ...I've never made any socks toe-up method ... ok, the only pair of socks I've ever made were knitted the other way round... :D for me all the yarn stores on the planet are dangerous (especially for my budget and also for my time - I could spend hours there! ) :D

  6. What fun colors for sock yarn! I've been wanting to try toe-up socks for a while now as well as magic loop.

  7. It's a great episode! We're big doctor who fans here - right from the beginning with my Dad in the 60s.
    I am planning to learn the toe-up method this Autumn so I'll be interested to see if you change your mind.

  8. Great color yarn. Good idea to work on both socks at once. I've never tried the toe up method.

  9. I've never tried the magic loop method, but dpn's workd just fine for me too.
    I think one of my favorite times to knit is in the wee hours of the morning while everyone else is asleep, it always starts my day right.
