Blue

I cast on last night for a new nephew expected in early May. You can't tell yet, but this is the Pembroke Vest [rav link] in the 6 month size.

I'm not terribly happy with it. Not because of the pattern, but because I'm generally unhappy with knitting lately. I've seriously cast on four different things in the past week and ripped them all back out after about 2 hours of work, because I wasn't crazy about the project. I can't seem to find that one project I really want to work on.

Do you ever get that feeling? I haven't lost the knitting love- I *want* to knit, I'm just not finding a project to be super excited about.

Perhaps the problem has been the renewed focus on sewing- this week has brought new shorts and pajamas for the boys and hemming a gazillion work pants for Brian- I'm on the 5th and last pair this week, and then back to my petticoat!

And since Ginny also invites us to write about our reading, I'm almost done with Redwall this week for fiction, and I have the Red Pyramid waiting. For non-fiction I've been looking through booklists and working on all kinds of things for next year in our homeschool. I'm still waffling on a math curriculum, but I have the basics down for our 6 terms of science and history, and I'm just about ready to start setting booklists.

What are you reading?

  1. That vest is lovely - I hope it piques your interest.
I know what you mean about sewing vs. knitting. I only seem to be able to focus on one or the other. Sounds like you've been getting lots done, though!
I read the first Redwall book just after Christmas - maybe I should have a look at the Red Pyramid book.

  2. i switch between sewing and knitting sometimes daily. it is funny, even though they are both creative expression, i feel very different when i do one or the other...so i know what you mean.
i hope the vest becomes exactly what you want it to become :)

  4. I have seen that vest on ravelry before. It is very cute. The blue you have chosen looks nice too. I love the Pebble vest that in on ravelry. I have knitted it many times and in different sizes. It is an all-in-one knit. Hope you enjoy more sewing too. Jacinta

  5. I have seen so many adorable sweaters for babes today!! I recently received a new sewing skirts book and I am itching to get my machine out. Maybe after this next project...Hope you find a terrific pattern for knitting to find your spark again, or just maybe a break for sewing is not so bad!!

  6. Erin, I understand exactly what you mean about being unmotivated, or uninspired to knit certain things. Sometimes, it's the challenge of a new skill (I am to make Stephane for my daughter, but want to knit it in the round, not flat!) that keeps me from casting on, or exhaustion, or just flat-out Blah feeling.
But then! THen I go with a whim, something I hadn't planned, and just do it! And it almost always revvs me up!

I am so glad I found your blog! I look forward to reading more!

  7. Y'all are making me feel so much better! I don't know what it is exactly, but it seems like my knitting mojo is lagging.

The search for an *awesome* project begins!

  10. I do the same thing with knitting and sewing. When I'm just burnt out on knitting, I can always turn to sewing, and vice versa. I'm sure you'll get your mo jo back soon!

  12. Oh my, I do love that vest! And the yarn you are using seems utterly perfect.

I know what you mean. I think things DO go in waves -- you just have to ride the wave!
The problem is that knitting is such a good thing to have in your purse for those moments of waiting, when a sewing machine would be a bit out of place ;)

  13. thanks for visiting. yes i adore working with Quince and Co wool. it is really round and soft. the best thing is though, especially with the bigger wools like Lark and Osprey, it knits up really fast, and you don't need too many balls. i have finished the body of a sweater for myself with only 3 and a half balls!
good luck. i definitely recommend it. :)

  14. My goodness, at the moment I can't sympathize because I am working on a knit yoke with a fabric skirt for my favorite 2 year old. It combines both skills AND my addiction to both yarn and fabric. Maybe you need a daughter! ;)

I have a mountain of patterns that I am eager to start, but gardening season is fast approaching and I don't dare begin them.

I suspect that perfect pattern will appear very soon for you. Maybe it is a sock?

  15. I think you've landed on a lovely project. That blue is heavenly. I can totally relate to the rip it out start again issue. I think when you are knitter it just comes with the territory!

  16. I get the same way too. Have a really hard time getting something started and sticking with it. Then the right project will come along and BOOM!

  17. Marie, maybe it *is* a sock. I picked up my March sock again last night and made it through a repeat. Tonight I'm going to aim to finish up the last of the pants hemming and then spend the evening with that sock and see if it lifts my knitting spirits.
